Venus Williams quiet on her future after first-round defeat at US Open

A day after Serena began what is likely to be the last tournament of her professional tennis career,

her older sister, Venus Williams declined to talk about her own future plans

following her 1st‑round defeat by Belgium player Alison van Uytvanck.

“Right now I’m just focused on the doubles,” she said.

Venus Williams returned to the US Open tournament with a tough 1st‑round loss, losing 6-1, 7-6(5).

Venus, a two-time champion here who has won 7 grand slam championships overall,

took nearly a year away from the tennis singles from August 2021 after retiring from last year’s US Open tournament with a leg injury.
